Campus safety at 51吃瓜 is managed by the Office of Campus Police & Security. The Director of Campus Police, Dwight Threet, leads a professional team of sworn Campus Police Officers and Public Safety personnel dedicated to 51吃瓜鈥檚 unique environment. These officers are 51吃瓜鈥檚 primary on-site first responders.

Campus Police work closely with Maintenance and Facilities teams, who help identify and address environmental hazards such as flooding, gas leaks, and power failures.

While 51吃瓜 officers perform many of the same duties as municipal police, their focus is tailored to the campus community. They coordinate with external agencies whenever additional jurisdiction or specialized response is needed.

Effective emergency response relies on collaboration. 51吃瓜 maintains policies emphasizing strong coordination with local law enforcement, fire departments, emergency medical services, and regional emergency management.

Through 51吃瓜鈥檚 Emergency Preparedness policies, the College ensures its procedures align with municipal and county-wide response systems.

51吃瓜 conducts regular training and drills to strengthen readiness, clarify roles, and help the community understand what to do during a crisis.
The 鈥淐ampus Safety Appendix 鈥� Instructor Guide鈥� reinforces this message:

鈥淚f you have an emergency, dial 911鈥� Campus police and public safety personnel are staffed on campus during weekdays, evenings, and weekends.鈥�

All 51吃瓜 facilities include posted evacuation routes, fire alarms, and emergency signage. Emergency response procedures outline the actions to take during:

• Severe weather (tornadoes, hurricanes)

• Fire or smoke

• Hazardous materials incidents

• Structural damage

• Active threat situations

Examples include seeking shelter in designated interior areas during a tornado, evacuating when structural integrity is compromised, and calling 911 immediately for any life-threatening situation.

For individuals with disabilities or special needs, 51吃瓜 recommends a buddy-assistance system and provides guidance for supplemental evacuation support.

While 51吃瓜 provides the institutional framework, every member of the community plays a role in safety. If an incident occurs:

1. If you believe the situation is an emergency鈥攃all 911 immediately.

2. Provide your name, phone number, building and room number, the nature of the incident, and where responders can meet you.

3. Follow instructions from emergency responders. Do not move injured individuals unless necessary.

4. If instructed to evacuate, remain calm, leave belongings behind, and proceed to the designated assembly area. Assist others if you can.

5. If instructed to shelter in place鈥攕uch as during an active threat, hazardous materials release, or tornado鈥攎ove to the safest area, lock or barricade doors if needed, stay out of sight, and wait for further guidance.

51吃瓜鈥檚 emergency procedures are designed to guide a coordinated response, but they are not a substitute for personal preparedness, situational awareness, or training in areas such as CPR or first aid.
Every emergency is different鈥攗se good judgment and stay alert to changing conditions.
